Cardboard kayak race highlights inaugural HarborFest

August 28, 2016

Thousands gathered on the Harbor Point boardwalk Saturday to enjoy live music, exercise classes, carnival rides — and even a cardboard kayak race.

SoundWaters, a long-standing Stamford-based nonprofit, launched HarborFest, an inaugural event to celebrate the Long Island Sound, the city’s harbor and 375th anniversary.

“A vital harbor is not just about high-rises and restaurants, as awesome as this all is,” said Leigh Shemitz, president of SoundWaters. “It’s about getting people actively engaged in the water and using it, learning about it and being in it. That’s what this day is all about.”

For 27 years, SoundWaters has encouraged thousands of children, youth and adults to learn about Long Island Sound, and to utilize it.

“If you know about something, you care about something,” said Bob Mazzone, vice president of development for SoundWaters. “And if you care about something, you take care of something.”
